Upon rebooting, Windows 7 reinstalled a generic "High Definition Audio Device" driver, and now I have my sound back! In Device Manager, expand category "Sound, video and game controllers".  Under this category, right-click on your sound card device name. Your HDMI monitor should have an audio input if you don't have a HDMI audio device. It did work after initial release of Windows 10 on Oct 29th but then broke several weeks later and "manual install" of HD audio driver WILL NOT WORK. What you are required to do then is connect a separate audio cable from your PC sound card directly to the monitor. No luck.
