With further testing we noticed that email sent out using the OWA client would flow through without a problem (to the same external addresses). This server is running as a 'Member' in the exchange environment. When I installed it, I did it on my desk, so, it could find whichever server it wanted. Exchange 2000 uses this method so that you can protect your Exchange DB on the LAN but still make it accessible to your clients through OWA.
