Doing the same thing as described problem. Over my lifetime in computers I've been bitten many times with hard drives going out and losing data. 100's of megabytes to now hundreds of gigabytes. Windows will also check for bad sectors, when you perform a full format or chkdsk command.

Your Mac is humming along nicely now, and if you've never had a computer die on you before, you might think it'll go on crunching binary bits forever.
