I believe at boot motherboards stagger hard drive spin up to spread And I agree with the advice that a 7 year old PSU is likely due for replacement; at that age you're likely to start seeing things like capacitor failure. About the only suggestion I can offer is to try a new SATA cable. If you don't want the headaches, there are probably local shops that will do it for you at reasonable costs and have the knowledge to do it right the first time. Check This Out

test 'lost' drives in another computer. Is your power supply powerful enough as that could cause a problem. Disk disappeared, even disk utility did not list it, and then restart and it reappears.
